Engine Ashes Only - Part 1

The room shakes – a deep, dull tremor that rattles every fitting of the cheaply furnished house. There’s a loud scraping noise from outside, one that sets my teeth on edge. Shadows play through the tattered curtains, casting rough angular shapes on the unpainted wall. This must mean only one thing – it’s half-six. Time to wake up. Groaning, I half stumble, half fall out of bed and stagger into the shower, where the intermittently scalding/freezing water sluices the lethargy out of me. With liberal application of Brylcreem, I comb my hair into a perfectly-defined, laser-straight parting and slip a pitch-black peaked c
